It feels like a throwback
The new Apple Pencil uses USB-C and may have fewer features than the last one, but that price is fantastic.
Lots of rumors have swirled around Apple's announcement today of the new Apple Pencil USB-C, but not many of them seem to be true.
The Apple Pencil USB-C is just that. An Apple Pencil that has USB-C built into the top of the device, with a cap to cover the connection that's used to pair and charge the device. The big news here appears to be that this is a $79 Apple Pencil, which should appeal to the budget-conscious crowd.
Among the features Apple mentioned in the blog post announcing the release of the Apple Pencil is compatibility with USB-C iPads, including the 10th Gen iPad, 4th and 5th Gen iPad Air, the 1st through 4th Gen iPad Pro 11-inch, the 3rd through 6th Gen iPad Pro 12.9-inch, and the 6th Gen iPad mini.
It also supports the hover capability when used with an M2 iPad Pro, and works with Scribble, Quick Note, and Freeform.
Notably missing from this new Apple Pencil are pressure sensitivity and double-tap to change tools. Also, while the Apple Pencil USB-C does have a flat magnetic side to magnetically attach to the iPad, it does not charge wirelessly. However, Apple notes the Pencil USB-C will enter a sleep state while attached to the iPad to preserve battery life.
Apple Pencil USB-C will be available in November for $79, making it more affordable than the $99 Apple Pencil 1st Gen and the $129 Apple Pencil 2nd Gen.
