While Rencol’s plastic handwheels are strong durable, some applications will demand the extra strength and durability found in steel and stainless steel handwheels. Rencol has also developed a spoked aluminium control handwheel with side handle that is popular with machine builders for its strength, low weight and durability.

I hope some of that research funding is spent looking for solutions to any accelerated wear problems that are found.
